Swissgrid to take over the Swiss transmission system

By the end of 2012 Swissgrid will have taken over the Swiss power supply grid in accordance with the Electricity Supply Act (see StromVG). From then onwards Swissgrid will own and operate the 6,700 km Swiss transmission system. This is an extremely complex transaction involving the takeover of some 20,000 contracts. The transaction is a once-only undertaking and a huge responsibility for Swissgrid.

Major project shared by electricity sector

Swissgrid is tackling the transfer process in collaboration with the current transmission system owners. The highest body in this major project is the Steering Committee, which is composed of delegates from Swissgrid and the transmission system owners. This ensures all sides in the transfer process are represented.

Clear project structure and responsibility

Overall responsibility for the project is held by Pierre-Alain Graf, CEO of Swissgrid. All the details will be clarified and worked out in five subprojects. Among their aims is the conclusion of the different contracts between the transmission system owners and Swissgrid, and the completion of a careful review of these extensive transactions – the process known as due diligence. In addition, the smooth operation of the grid must be ensured at all times during the transfer process.
