The Swiss electricity grid is extremely important for international electricity trading. For decades it has been a hub for balancing peaks in demand and production, as well as for transit.
Switzerland is a founding member of the ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity), which was formed from six predecessor organisations and has been operational since the summer of 2009. ENTSO-E is made up of 42 operators of transmission systems in 34 European countries. ENTSO-E's main responsibilities are to draw up network codes, coordinate the TSOs and further develop the transmission systems.
Swissgrid is a recognised centre of competence in ENTSO-E. For almost 60 years, Switzerland has performed the function of Coordination Centre South, which encompasses France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and the countries of southeastern Europe. Switzerland’s importance is also apparent from the figures: more than 30 lines connect the Swiss transmission system with other countries. These lines carry 11% of all the electricity that is exchanged between the ENTSO-E countries.
