Ancillary services (AS) are auxiliary services which are intended to ensure a secure and permanent supply of electricity. They ensure a continuous balance between consumption and production. Swissgrid has the legally prescribed task of procuring ancillary services using market-based processes.
Those responsible for providing ancillary services are known as ancillary service providers (ASP). The providers or their power plants are subjected to a technical and operational appraisal by Swissgrid. Only once this appraisal has been successfully completed may the provider provide AS on the market.
Coordination with Swissgrid, submission of offers for AS, provision and delivery of control energy are just some of the tasks of an ASP.
In the future, not only producers but also electricity consumers such as waste incineration plants or cold storage warehouses will provide ancillary services.
