In the mid-twentieth century, a secure electricity supply was established in Switzerland – this was a pioneering achievement and one that has contributed considerably to our prosperity. Now we need more pioneering achievements.
We have to pave the way for coming generations to have a secure, sustainable electricity supply – to ensure our future wellbeing.
Situated at the heart of Europe, Switzerland is at the centre of the European transmission system. Ambitious constructions in the Alps in the 1950s made Switzerland into a key European electricity hub. Now we need to reinforce and build on this position. As a transit country, in the future we will need an infrastructure that meets the requirements of sustainably produced energy.
Switzerland is considered the hydroelectricity centre of Europe; hydropower plays a vital role in our country. This geographical advantage will become even more important in the future. The capacity for storing electricity needs to be increased, because the production of electricity from renewable sources is subject to greater fluctuations. Switzerland’s network of pumped storage power plants is therefore being expanded. The country will play a key role as the «battery of Europe».
