Minimum production agreed with hydropower storage plants in Western Switzerland

Swissgrid has agreed a minimum level of production with selected hydropower storage plants in order to reduce possible increased redispatch demand during the low-consumption days.

To guarantee the grid security in the region between Bassecourt, Mühleberg and Chamoson, Swissgrid has agreed a minimum level of production with selected power plants in Western Switzerland for the period of the low-consumptions days between Christmas and New Year. This measure results from the limited availability of the Bassecourt transformer as well as the new Mühleberg transformer, which has not yet been installed. Both projects will be implemented in spring 2020.

The purpose of this preventive measure is to avoid the overloading of grid elements in Western Switzerland. For this reason Swissgrid has agreed a minimum level of production of cumulative 200 MW (off-peak) and 400 MW (peak) with selected power plants from the region in the period from 20.12.2019 to 06.01.2020 (8 a.m.). This will reduce an increased redispatch demand during the Christmas holidays and New Year. Swissgrid will monitor the situation constantly and will decide whether any further grid-stabilising measures are necessary until the deployment of the new transformers in Bassecourt and Mühleberg.
