New solutions to increase grid capacity

In association with seven European transmission system operators, Swissgrid is launching the second open call of the Grid Innovation Alliance (formerly the TSO Innovation Alliance). Under the title «The Grid at its Limit», the Alliance is looking for innovative technologies and solutions to reduce grid congestion and tap into additional capacity within the existing grid.

The energy transition, increasing electrification and the expansion of renewable energy are pushing up demand for transfer capacity across Europe. At the same time, this rise in demand is outpacing the expansion of the grid. We are therefore seeking new ways to make better use of the existing grid infrastructure without relying solely on grid expansion.

The central theme of the innovation competition: How can we reduce grid congestion and obtain more capacity from the existing grid?

The Grid Innovation Alliance is looking for technologies and solutions for grid operations and asset management that have not yet been tested by the participating transmission system operators. Ideas from other sectors are also welcome.

Four subject areas

The Alliance is interested in innovations in four areas:

Why take part?

Selected providers will be given the opportunity to enhance their solutions in collaboration with members of the Grid Innovation Alliance and to test them in proof-of-concept projects.
