The current status quo is based on transitional and special arrangements, while the EU continues to deepen the integration of its electricity market and grid cooperation. Without an Electricity Agreement, the starting position will change: the status quo will no longer exist, and Switzerland’s position will gradually deteriorate. This means that Switzerland risks a gradual loss of legal certainty, influence and market access, all of which are important factors for maintaining the country’s security of supply and grid stability.

Photovoltaic production in Switzerland is growing rapidly – by 2050, installed capacity is expected to reach 40 gigawatts, five times more than today. This growth also increases the need to use solar energy to stabilise the transmission grid. In the pilot project PV4Balancing, Swissgrid is investigating how solar installations can be integrated into the tertiary balancing energy market in the future.

2025 financial year: focus on the grid of the future

Swissgrid fulfilled its key responsibility with 100% grid availability in 2025. This meant that Swissgrid’s grid was available at all times, in an environment in which the stable operation of the transmission grid is becoming increasingly difficult.
