The supply of energy and electricity in Switzerland and Europe is undergoing a profound transformation. This makes controlling the grid more difficult.
Climate change, extreme weather conditions, a dynamic European power market environment and the extensive modernisation of the grid infrastructure pose further challenges. As the cross-border exchange of electricity rises, Switzerland remains partially excluded from central EU processes for grid security calculations – with a direct impact on planning, operation and security of supply.
For the secure operation of the Swiss transmission grid, this means that production plants, storage systems, consumers and the grid will have to work together much more closely and intelligently in future. Swissgrid is tackling this complexity in a targeted manner with digital solutions and new technologies.
Innovation & digitalisation as the key to success
Our drive
We are anticipating the energy future and developing solutions for Swissgrid’s core business. The added value from data, digital tools and new technologies contribute directly to system stability and grid infrastructure resilience.
Our mission
In association with our partners, we develop solutions with clear benefits for grid operations, asset management or other business areas. Innovation and digitalisation contribute directly to stability, efficiency and security of supply. We are committed to open collaboration and promote innovation processes across company and organisational boundaries (open innovation).
How Swissgrid drives innovation
- Incubate: we develop innovative ideas (ideation), considering relevant technology trends (technology scouting). We test the feasibility of an idea or technology for its practical suitability (validation) in proof of concepts (PoC). We then conduct pilot projects to test prototypes under realistic conditions to evaluate processes, scalability and integration into operations.
- Co-create: innovation at Swissgrid is the result of interaction between internal experts and external partners. Together, we develop technology applications to scalable maturity and implement them in operations, thereby strengthening effective, collaborative innovation management.
- Inspire, activate and accelerate: thanks to innovation programmes, initiatives and coaching, we promote initiative and innovative strength throughout the company so that ideas can be turned into specific plans, projects or new business ideas.
Swissgrid ensures that innovation and digitalisation generate measurable benefits and actively help shape the energy system of tomorrow.
Fields of action and innovation priorities
Swissgrid has identified four key topics for its innovation activities: «Transformation of the energy system», «The grid control room of the future», «Data, applied AI and algorithms» and «Digital asset monitoring and new technologies». The complexity of these problems calls for integrated solutions, which Swissgrid is developing in a targeted manner by means of innovation projects.
Open innovation & ecosystems
Innovation is the result of targeted collaboration across company boundaries. We are convinced that collaboration between start-ups, research and industry in an innovation ecosystem can lead to better solutions by pooling knowledge.
This is why we are actively encouraging the development of innovative projects by cooperating with universities, research centres, start-ups and other companies. Swissgrid plays a key role in established innovation ecosystems such as the «Cross-Industry Ecosystem», the «TSO Innovation Alliance» and the CRESYM research ecosystem.
We accelerate the path from research to the operational implementation of solutions by means of open cooperation. Thanks to synergies, this dynamic exchange enables us and our partners to gain insights more quickly, carry out technology scouting efficiently and jointly develop new solutions for the energy system of tomorrow.
